Melbourne North Police Community Consultative Committee – Update – CCTV and Safety

Members and friends

Jan Lacey is the NWMA representative on the Melbourne North Police Community Consultative Committee.

They had a meeting this morning and here is a report from Jan.

Regards

Kevin Chamberlin

Secretary.

I hope that members with CCTV cameras were able to complete the form to advise local police of their location. It was circulated by the association on 2 February. At the PCCC meeting on 20 February the use of CCTV cameras was again on the agenda. We were told that it can be a two-way process – instead of waiting for police to ask for access to your cameras in the case of a crime committed nearby, it was requested that if you see something suspicious caught on camera that you send it to Crime Stoppers. Sometimes what you have recorded can be an important part of a puzzle, even though it does not give the complete picture. Such postings are greatly appreciated.

The C of M representative at the meeting reported that council is collecting data about the impact of the West Gate tunnel opening, including in West Melbourne. But anecdotal evidence apparently suggests that a lot of trucks and other vehicles are avoiding the tunnel because of the high tolls.

I have also attached an article that members may find interesting about the State government’s Victorian Crime Reduction Unit: https://theconversation.com/how-victorias-new-crime-reduction-unit-can-help-tackle-its-youth-crime-problem-270048?utm_medium=article_native_share&utm_source=theconversation.com

And finally, you can probably guess what topped the local crime figures – thefts from motor vehicles; many left unlocked, or with valuables displayed. Please take care. And there was a brief discussion about Faraday Bags in which car keys and other property can be kept to avoid hacking or tracking. You may want to investigate them.
